A number of terrorist groups continue to exist even though the conflict they formed to participate in is (largely) over. Evidence indicates that the reason they continue to exist is that individuals within the groups are pursuing personal gain (utilizing organized crime) through the cachet and fear of their group’s histories. They are also collaborating with rogue states on criminal endeavors involving drugs and murder.
By shifting the focus to individual actors rather than their group affiliations, Terror for Profit offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between terrorism and organized crime. Through the lens of individual motives, we can identify shared factors and influences among different terrorist campaigns, leading to a deeper understanding of the evolving nature of terrorism.
